An introduction to Dodge trucks
Chrysler has been designing and building trucks for over eighty years, but the real story of the Sport Dodge begins with the mating of the half-ton pick-up chassis and the 413 cubic inch displacement (cid) Max Wedge V8. The 413 V8 was designed as a medium duty truck engine, but proved sufficiently adaptable that it found its way into both Dodge Dart 330 and 440 street and NASCAR configurations. Competition success and street performance encouraged Chrysler to look at the big block 413 as a means of focusing attention on, and enhancing sales of the stagnant light truck line. These performance oriented pickup trucks were marketed from 1964-67 under the model classification of Custom Sport Special, or Read the rest of this entry »
No CommentsDriver safety: The dangers of cell phones
I know we can all think of at least 30 things people do in cars that cause distractions, and most live to tell about it. But a fresh October, 2007 issue of the Reader’s Digest has an article titled “Deadly Distractions” with some real eye-opening facts in it.
Of course, people eat and (hopefully non alcoholic) drink while driving all the time. But that kind of almost reflexive action doesn’t require much thinking. Even pushing a channel changer on the radio only requires a fraction of second to perform rather mindlessly.
What makes cell phone use so distracting is that most people are actually mentally involved in a 2-way conversation that requires thought-processing time. Whereas you can carry on a conversation with Read the rest of this entry »
No CommentsThe best commercial tires
We are going to get down to the nitty gritty now because this subject is one that does not really compare all that much where the small cars or pickups is concerned except in mileage received.
The definition of a commercial tire can take in a pickup or van all the way up to a heavy truck. The reason I made the above statement about commercial tires not comparing with small car and pickup tires is, a commercial vehicle is normally loaded much of the time and a small car or pickup is not. Loading makes a huge difference as it causes the wheel alignment settings and tire air pressures to become even more critical for optimal performance.

No CommentsCar reviews: 2006 Volkswagen Rabbit
Volkswagen brought its then European-only Golf to the North American market in 1975 and called it the Rabbit. It remained on this continent for a decade. Now the manufacturer is repeating itself.
Released well into the season, the new 2006 Rabbit has been redesigned and is slightly larger, heavier and offers more head room and foot room than the Golf. Those are nice editions to the standard Volkswagen philosophy: Upscale Euro-styled smaller cars without upscale prices.
The new Rabbit succeeds. My weekly test drive was the four-door hatchback, one of six available configurations. It had a 151-horsepower, 5-cylinder engine with a five-speed automatic transmission. A 200-horsepower turbocharged GTI version is also available with standard and manual transmissions. Both engines styles also have Read the rest of this entry »
No CommentsTowing safety tips
Different countries have different laws regarding towing of trailers and the best way to ascertain these is to contact your local regulatory authority however there are some basics which apply if you want to safely tow a trailer wherever you may be in the world.
1. All vehicles have tow ratings. A tow rating is the maximum weight your vehicle can safely pull. You can find this in the vehicle’s operating manual. Before you hitch your trailer to your vehicle you need to know the unloaded weight of your trailer and the estimated weight of the load.
2. It is not only the vehicle but the hitch assembly and the tow ball which also have ratings. If you are pulling a large Read the rest of this entry »
No CommentsThe greatest car ever invented
I know it might not be considered a car’, but I would like to put forward my own nomination for the best car in the world.
Okay, first I must be honest; you cannot drive it on the road, well if you did you would be pulled over and a nice guy with a gun and a badge would have a long chat with you and then put handcuffs on you. No, this one is more at home on the racing track. I am talking of course of the racing kart. I first started karting when I was about ten years old and I loved it, especially when the track was soaked. I loved the karts but they were only Read the rest of this entry »
What do the numbers on a tire mean?
Last week I was forced to purchase a new set of tires for my still-running 1996 Chevrolet Cavalier. I guess it’s a good thing since the old ones were all worn to the bone, dry-rotted, and the tread on one of the tires was literally peeling away. Gazing at the selection in my local Sam’s Club Tire & Auto Center, I selected a set of BF Goodrich Tour T/A Pros. A good choice; my ride is now much smoother and they handle like a charm. But what about those numbers? What exactly do they mean?
Deciphering the numbers on the sidewall of the tire may be confusing at first glance, but they provide important information about the tire’s dimensions, load capacity, Read the rest of this entry »
No CommentsPower truck or powertrain: Making sense of the terminology used in truck reviews
[ NOTE TO RANKERS: This revision corrects a mistake in the definition of displacement in the last paragraph. There are no other changes.]
HORSEPOWER vs TORQUE
Power measures how fast work is done. If you lift a hundred pounds, one foot high, in exactly one second, you are exerting 100 foot-pounds per second of power. Horsepower is a unit of power equal to 550 foot-pounds per second. (Horsepower also equals 746 watts, three quarters of a kilowatt, or 2,544 BTU per hour).
Torque is the turning force generated by the engine, measured in pound-feet. To get an idea of what torque is, imagine a ten-pound hammer with a handle one foot long. If you grasp it at the end of the handle, and Read the rest of this entry »
No CommentsAn overview of the 2007 GEM line of vehicles
For almost ten years now, Global Electric Motorcars has been working on small, electric cars. They’ve come a long way from their first car in 1998, which barely made 20 mph and only carried two passengers. GEM’s 2007 line of cars includes six street legal models which are perfect for cruising around town.
All of the vehicles are easily recharged in any outlet. They each have a top speed of 25 mph, and the range on each vehicle varies from 30 to 40 miles. Three of the vehicles are geared towards passengers, while the other three are geared towards transporting cargo.
Of the three passenger vehicles, you can choose from the GEM e2 (a two seater), GEM e4 Read the rest of this entry »
No CommentsHow to buy a quality used car
Since landing myself a new job opportunity 55 miles away (nice career development move!) I have been on the car buying merry go round with a vengeance. Obviously for that distance both fuel economy and comfort are of utmost importance and I am looking for something quite rare – notably a diesel automatic vehicle, budget was stretching to a 3-5yr old vehicle depending on how prestigious a model I elected for, and low mileage was a factor as I will no doubt be doing 100,000 miles in the next 3 years without doing a lot more than commuting.
In years previous, the autotrader magazine has always served its purpose relatively well, although 500 pages of black and white car Read the rest of this entry »
