How Can You Speed Up The Performance Of Your PC?
When it comes to that dreaded question how can I speed
up my PC? There are few things to point out that make this process a lot simpler for the novice.
First, what causes a slow computer?
A number of items can slow down your computer ranging from computer age, amount of information being created then deleted, programs that suck up your system resources, to even viruses that flood your computer with false detections.
Let’s take a look at the first on that list of reasons. The computer age. The age of the computer can determine whether or not your PC is better off with some upgrades to your hard drive (the computer part that stores your computer information) or not. You hard drive does have a shelf life but does not necessary have a consistent death time. Your hard drive may last you 1 year or even 5 years but older hard drives will tend to perform a little slower over time.
Next on the list is the amount of information being created then deleted from the computer. Your hard drive is basically a DVD platter (well several of those) that spin in a very precise measurement. Those DVD platters like regular DVDs have a bunch of electronic holes on the disc surface. When you create a new file the hard drive will fill a hole on the platter with the information. When you remove or delete the file the computer takes 90% of that information out of the hole leaving a fragment of information there to restore the file. Over time your hard drive can become fragmented and needs to be defragmented. This process basically takes all the little extras pieces from files and stores them into one area of the hard drive leaving your drive holes empty and fresh for new information. The reason that this slows down your computer is during the processing stage. Everytime you tell your computer to find a file, song, movie, etc your computer has to scan through all those fragmented files until it comes across the correct information and then return that to the screen. You can only image how much slower your computer will move if your computer is years old with tons of fragmented files.
Programs that suck up your system resources are next on our check off list. You computer has what is called RAM or random access memory. This is the physical memory that you use or tell your computer to use everytime you perform an action on your computer. The information is stored into the RAM and then moves into its destination clearing itself of the RAM. Your windows operating system also uses RAM to perform its process as well as software. Ever tried to open 20 things at once and find yourself pulling your hair out because your computer is moving so slow? That’s because you are zapping your system resources or RAM and everything has to wait its turn to work its way through RAM. By hitting ctrl + alt + del buttons at once you can open up your task manager and view your CPU usage. This isn’t the RAM but rather your processor gauge. RAM & the central processing unit work hand and hand to give you what you ask for. To view how much of your RAM is being used click back on that task manager and navigate to the processes tab and click on the memory uses tab once to show the program using the most memory at any given time.
Lastly the loose term computer virus is on the list. A computer virus is simply a program that is designed to attack your computer in various ways. The virus creator would be the one to determine what system area to attack. Most of the time a virus will almost always attack your computer in multiple areas ranging from maxing out your system resources leaving your computer running at a snails pace to attacking other common features like disabling your task manager, randomly closing your computer after start up to even stealing your information. Thankfully there are companies that love to battle with virus hackers. Antivirus companies are constantly updating their databases with the cure to viruses as people create the by dissecting them and reversing what they are attacking.
