Do rescued animals make good pets? – Part 4
Do Rescue animals make good pets? Do adoptive children make good kids? Some may assume that rescue animals do not make good pets due to their past experiences that landed them in a rescue shelter in the first place. Granted animals from the rescue shelter can have issues. I have found that the shelter knows how the animal came into their experience. They work with the animal on a daily basis and get to know the animals disposition. When the shelter is advertising the animal for adoption, generally their wording is specific to the dogs age, past, behavior and ideal adoptive setting. For example, a shelter won’t place a dog who is not good with kids in a home with children.
For people who go to the rescue shelters looking for a pet are generally compassionate, caring and patient which rescue animals require for different reasons. If an animal at a rescue shelter is of interest but is timid and shy and the potential adoptive candidate prefers a happy and energetic animal then the shy and timid one would not be a good choice, no matter how cute it is.
I have heard of success stories with animals from rescue shelters, animals that were previously abused and or abandoned. With love and patience the animal turns around and with trust starts becoming themselves, showing less neurotic symptoms.
Not all animals from the rescue shelter will be deeply troubled but most are because they have been rescued from a traumatic situation. For someone considering turning to a rescue shelter to find an animal for themselves, it is a good idea to understand the predicament that the animal was faced with prior to coming into the shelter and to be able to care for the animal in a more nurturing way than one would for an animal not acquired from a rescue shelter. These animals will need a certain level of care and attention that other animals probably like but don’t necessarily need.
With the proper care, attention and time working with a rescue animal, they can make great pets. Particularly dogs because they really are mans best friend and want to be. They will do almost anything to please their handler. Like any living thing, they will thrive in a happy, caring and nurturing environment.
