Do rescued animals make good pets? – Part 12

Rescued animals make excellent pets. Whether you pick up a stray or go to your local shelter or breed rescue group, chances are you’ll end up with a wonderful new family member. Rescued animals seem to have a sixth sense and know that you’re doing something good for them. The appear to be eternally grateful to their rescuer.

Many years ago we were visiting Atlantic City from our home in PA, about 2 hours away. We sat on the boardwalk in the blazing sun for a while. All of a sudden, a German shepherd came up onto the boardwalk and collapsed from the heat. A young store clerk allowed us to take him into the air conditioned store for a little while. A pizza shop employee saw what was happening and brought a giant cup of water to help us. A rickshaw person gave us his belt as a collar. We revived the dog and had already decided to take him home. My boyfriend drove our car onto the boardwalk and we picked the dog up, loaded him into the backseat and drove home. Our new family member was exhausted and slept the entire way home. To make a long story short, we had him for 12 years until he died of old age. He learned everything we tried teaching him almost immediately. He was my protector and friend all the rest of his life. We always thought the reason he was so easily trained was because he was trying to please us.

Having been in 2 different breed rescues for the past 10 years, I’ve heard almost every reason of why people could no longer keep their pets. The majority of animals that come into rescue aren’t there because they’re bad animals. They’re there because their owners are moving, have died, have a new baby, have a new dog, don’t know how to housebreak the dog, got the dog as a gift and don’t want it, etc. You get the picture. These dogs just need a little patience and training from a knowledgeable person. Most are very happy to go to a new home and adjust very quickly.

If you choose to rescue a dog, a breed rescue is a great place to go because the rescuer will interview you and do a home visit, then match the dog to your needs. This ensures that both dog and family are happy. If you choose to go to your local humane society, be sure to spend as much time as possible playing with the dog and getting to know his or her personality. Ask questions. Sometimes the staff knows a great deal about the dog. Sometimes they don’t. Either way, if you spend your own time with the dog, you can get a feel for him or her and make your decision. Regardless of where or how you get your rescue animal, always remember that they need love, patience and security. The more you put into them, the more you’ll get out of them. You may just end up with the best dog of your life!
