Are Bratz dolls appropriate for young girls? – Part 3
As a teenager, I am but a few years away from the target audience of Bratz dolls. I must admit that when I first saw them I was a little taken aback by the huge heads and heavy make-up on the dolls, and personally I still prefer Barbies, but that’s another matter. However, I didn’t actually see the major problem with them until my English teacher bought it up one day saying that she would never let her daughter near them, and I kind of see her point.
Compared to the Barbie dolls of the previous generation they are promoting promiscuous behavior and all of the outfits and themes are pretty much the same and seem to be mimicking the behavior of the bad role models of the older generations. Barbies on the other hand had a variety of styles of clothing, types of dolls (from mermaids to vets, movie starts to moms etc) and although their figures were not the most life-like or proportionate, they gave young girls much more to aspire to in later life.
I guess what I’m trying to say is that Bratz dolls are the new Barbies and they appeal more to the ever changing lifestyles of young girls, good or bad. The question remains however whether it is the dolls encouraging girls to want to grow up faster or whether it is the influence in the media on this that the dolls are caught up in that is drawing attention to them and increasing their popularity.
