TV show reviews: Flash Gordon

There is a new Series on the Sci-Fi channel these days, OK maybe its not new but its a new remake. Flash Gordon, has a more refined look than the movie of the same name while lacking in much of what made the movie and the other incarnations of this hero so popular. Since I have only seen the pilot and a few of the episodes as the first season has only just started, I must say that in many ways I am impressed and in a few ways I’m discouraged.

The things that impress me are the character development, the more refined look, and the use of relatively unknown thespians to portray the main characters. The things that have me concerned are the method by which travel to Mongo is possible, the story lines, and the fact that much of the story takes place on earth.

Much of what I know about Flash Gordon comes from the cartoon and the motion picture so I take the story with a good amount of salt since these two sources conflict in many ways and are in all likelihood not accurate representations of the original story. It is very difficult to replace Max Von Sydow as Ming the merciless in my mind and so the actor chosen to portray him in the new television series has big shoes to fill and yet the development of Ming as a merciless tyrant is coming along nicely. The development of Flash is a little more complicated since he has friends here on earth and he remains on earth for much of the show. Even so within the first few episodes we see him making friends of the different peoples (cantons) of Mongo. This is an important part of the development of Flash if the producers wish to end the story after a long run with Mings defeat.

It is unfortunate that the writers chose to base much of the story on earth, as part of the original appeal of Flash Gordon is his being trapped on Mongo and its many inhabited moons. This is probably a cost concern rather than a direct result of planned writing. It is more cost effective to have settings on earth than it is to pay for the settings of an alien environment, yet the look of Mongo does not appear much different than earth. The main difference is a lens filtering effect to show the viewer that one is not on earth anymore and yet the filtering effect is not used in doors on Mongo. Yes the look is more refined, but it still leaves much to be desired. One can only hope that the producers will take more care in the other environments and bring in the moons of Mongo as alternative settings.

The actors that portray Flash,
